Featured Solution: Cisco Unified CommunicationsA data center is where the majority of an enterprise servers and storage are located, operated and managed. Data centers are the biggest challenges facing IT executives in the coming years. Data center managers should implement improvements to your facilities. for example, raise the temperature of the data center and use energy management software. Most line of business managers take for granted 100 percent IT up time, instant access to trained support personnel, uninterrupted access to data, and are dependent on top-flight management of IT assets in data centers. Virtual machines offer many benefits: server consolidation, increased utilization and faster recovery times after failure. Virtualization was first introduced in the 1960s by IBM to boost utilization of large, expensive mainframe systems by partitioning them into logical, separate virtual machines that could run multiple applications and processes at the same time. In the 1980s and 1990s, this centrally shared mainframe model gave way to a distributed, client-server computing model, in which many low-cost x86 servers and desktops independently run specific applications. One of the greatest challenges facing IT professionals is effectively protecting business critical information, particularly the growing amount of data stored on distributed desktops, remote and laptop computers. The Cisco UCS uses three adapter types, with four specific models: the Cisco UCS 82598KR-CI 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, UCS M71KR-Q QLogic Converged Network Adapter, UCS M71KR-E Emulex Converged Network Adapter, and UCS M81KR Virtual Interface Card. Each of these cards has a pair of 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections to the Cisco Unified Computing System backplane that support the IEEE 802.1 Data Center Bridging function (formerly called Cisco Data Center Ethernet) to facilitate I/O unification within these adapters. On each adapter type, one of these backplane ports is connected through 10GBASE-KR to the A-side I/O module; then that connection goes to the A-side fabric interconnect. 10GBASE-KR is a copper midplane technology for interfacing adapters and switching elements through these midplanes. The other connection is 10GBASE-KR to the B-side I/O module; that connection then goes to the B-side fabric interconnect. Figure 3 later in this document shows this connectivity. Green IT facilities offer employees a healthy, comfortable work environment. In addition, green facilities enhance relations with local communities. The disk drive array may include 12 drives. Each of the first, second and third groups of disk drives may include 4 disk drives. The selected data may be stored on a first disk driveincluded in the first group of disk drives, a second disk drive included in the second group of disk drives and a third and fourth disk drive included in the third group of disk drives. The selected data may include boot code for each of the first andsecond storage processors. The boot code for the first storage processor may be stored on the first disk drive and the third disk drive and the boot code for the second storage processor is stored on the second disk drive and the fourth disk drive. Next-generation data centers have specific server networking needs, and the Cisco Nexus 5010 one-rack unit (RU) switch provides an Ethernet-based unified fabric that's designed to meet those needs. |
