Q. What is the best environment for complicated IT functions? A. Multiple systems, such as inventory control, credit card processing, accounting and much more will be involved in a complex process such as eCommerce checkout. A failure in one will compromise all the others. A data center is the best environment for these complicated IT functions. How exhaust air is returned to the cooling units within the data center is as important a consideration as the distribution of cool air to the servers. Hot aisle and cold aisle techniques must be extended to include evaluation of airflow dynamics. At higher power densities the amount of space required to house cooling equipment will overtake the number of cabinets. Alternate approaches, or a reduction in the amount of equipment housed in each cabinet, must be considered. Energy costs are the fastest-rising cost element in the data center cost portfolio. Beyond backup and recovery protection, ensuring maximum data center availability and uptime is clearly crucial to a business’s success. Business Continuity seldom goes beyond the planning stage at most companies, however, until downtime or data loss hit. Virtualization can be viewed as part of an overall trend in enterprise IT that includes autonomic computing, a scenario in which the IT environment will be able to manage itself based on perceived activity, and utility computing, in which computer processing power is seen as a utility that clients can pay for only as needed. Virtualization isn not a magic bullet for everything. While many solutions are great candidates for running virtually, applications that need a lot of memory, processing power or input/output may be best left on a dedicated server. If users are to embrace client backup, the backup process must be transparent. Users must be able to continue to work with little or no interruption. There must be protection while the computer is disconnected from the network, and there must be automatic storage management synchronisation when the computer is reconnected to the network. New or changed data should be replicated immediately to the disk drive whenever a file is saved or closed. The Cisco UCS uses three adapter types, with four specific models: the Cisco UCS 82598KR-CI 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, UCS M71KR-Q QLogic Converged Network Adapter, UCS M71KR-E Emulex Converged Network Adapter, and UCS M81KR Virtual Interface Card. Each of these cards has a pair of 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections to the Cisco Unified Computing System backplane that support the IEEE 802.1 Data Center Bridging function (formerly called Cisco Data Center Ethernet) to facilitate I/O unification within these adapters. On each adapter type, one of these backplane ports is connected through 10GBASE-KR to the A-side I/O module; then that connection goes to the A-side fabric interconnect. 10GBASE-KR is a copper midplane technology for interfacing adapters and switching elements through these midplanes. The other connection is 10GBASE-KR to the B-side I/O module; that connection then goes to the B-side fabric interconnect. Figure 3 later in this document shows this connectivity. There is growing pressure from environmentalists and, increasingly, the general public for governments to offer green incentives: monetary support for the creation and maintenance of ecologically responsible technologies. An High Availability Data solution must be practical to implement - minimizing acquisition cost and operational complexity while being able to efficiently scale-out to meet any performance requirement as business needs evolve. The Cisco Nexus 1000V aligns management of the operational environment for virtual machines and physical server connectivity in the data center , reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) by providing operational consistency and visibility throughout the network. It offers flexible collaboration between the server, network, security, and storage teams while supporting various organizational boundaries and individual team autonomy. |
